Hi, I'm John

I'm John Sosoka, the founder — and the engineer who does the work. I've been building software professionally for fifteen years. I started as a software tester, which taught me how systems fail, and worked my way up to principal engineer and tech lead, which taught me how to build systems that don't.

Along the way I delivered software for some of the biggest companies in America: a Fortune 500 bank, a major airline, one of the largest grocery chains in the country, a global consumer-electronics brand — plus legal software, e-commerce, and construction. Different industries, same job: understand the real problem, then build something dependable that ordinary people can use.

I also got to work at the front edge of AI — helping large companies ship some of their first in-house AI software, and contributing early to the open-source frameworks that power today's AI applications. I've written a technical blog for years; if you're the technical type, you're welcome to look under the hood.

Why I started Gem State Digital

Big companies have entire departments for this. When a process is wasteful, an engineer automates it. When software doesn't fit, a team builds one that does. Small businesses have the same problems and none of that support — the options are usually off-the-shelf software that almost fits, or agency quotes with a comma in the wrong place.

That gap is exactly what Gem State Digital exists to close. Modern AI tooling — used with fifteen years of judgment about where it helps and where it hurts — means one senior engineer can now deliver what used to take a team. I'd rather point that at the businesses in my own community than at another Fortune 500 backlog.

How I work

Straight answers. You'll hear what's possible, what it costs, and what I'd do in your shoes — including "don't build this" when that's the truth.
Plain English. You shouldn't need a glossary to hire an engineer. If I can't explain it simply, that's my failure, not yours.
Right-sized technology. The same tools big companies run on, scaled to small-business budgets. Most systems I build cost tens of dollars a month to run, not thousands.
No hostages. Everything comes with documentation and handover. You own what you pay for, and you're never stuck with a system only one person understands.
